Collagen is a protein found naturally in the human body responsible for supple, youthful and hydrated skin. Sculptra is a strategic injectable that works to stimulate the body's collagen production, creating plumper contours and combating sagging, aging skin. Sculptra can also help to fill in hollow cheeks and reverse facial indentations and depressions.

What is Sculptra?

Sculptra is a liquid, synthetic version of lactic acid. It is a safe, FDA-approved product that is injected into areas of the face to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles. Sculptra works by stimulating collagen, which allows tissue to expand at a gradual rate. Slowly over time, the lactic acid disintegrates and the patient’s own tissue replaces it. The collagen-building process usually takes 4 to 6 months. While the main use of this procedure is to treat lines, creases and folds in the skin and give patients a more youthful appearance, it is also used to treat fat loss in the face for people living with HIV.

What are the advantages?

For those looking to rejuvenate their appearance, Sculptra is a popular option due to its many benefits:

  • The treatment is carried out by trained professionals
  • There is no testing required prior to the first Sculptra treatment
  • Patients can resume their daily routines immediately following the treatment
  • No preparation is required for carrying out the procedure
  • Enhances skin tone and texture
  • Boosts collagen regrowth
  • Long lasting results
  • Non-invasive and non-surgical
  • Enhanced self-confidence

Who makes a good candidate for Sculptra?

Sculptra is best suited for those that are concerned with a loss of fat volume in their skin. Although most patients who choose Sculptra are middle-aged, it is also popular amongst people in their 20’s and 30’s.

It is recommended, however, that people with compromised immune systems not seek out Sculptra treatment. Women that are pregnant or breast-feeding should also not consider Sculptra. In addition, those who are prone to scarring should avoid seeking out this treatment. Other factors such as use of blood thinners, aspirin and medications should be discussed with the patient’s dermatologist prior to treatment.

Is there any recovery I should know about?

Most people that choose this procedure can resume their normal daily activities immediately after the treatment is completed. It should be noted, however, that swelling and bruising do occur, but they are typically mild and go away after a couple of days. Those who wish to speed up the recovery process could benefit from doing the following:

  • Apply an ice pack to the treated area for a few minutes several times a day
  • Upon completing treatment, massage the treated area for a few minutes at a time, a few times a day for the first five days
  • Avoid sunlight and refrain from using tanning beds until all redness and swelling in the treated area has subsided
